FJ80 Knuckle Kit Hellfire Fabworks

FJ80 Knuckle Kit Hellfire Fabworks

The FJ80 stock axle has a lot of benefits, primarily being that it has a much stronger Birfield over any previous Land Cruiser or Toyota axle. From the factory it does have one major fault--no provision for high steer.

The HellFire Knuckles are a specially made high-pressure casting. They endure several hours of a highly difficult machine process.  The original designer Billy Weiss was determined to build everything better than factory.

He addressed the high steer issue by incorporating true high steer arms with 6 bolt retention and shimless adjustment. He reinforced the knuckle in just about every way. Then he took what we've learned from the mini truck knuckles over the ages--that the Toyota steering arm mounting bolts are too close together and undersized, causing the steering arm bolts to constantly require tightening and the studs to break.

To remedy this common issue, Billy created a 6 stud mounting with sufficient space between the studs to lessen the leverage which caused loosening and breakage. Billy took this project 90% there, then we did the fine tuning to make it what it is today. We took this one step further by using more common, less expensive, and stronger Dana 60 studs. The outer four studs are Dana 60 (Grade 10.9) and the inner two are 1/2" Allen head bolts (Grade 14). The tie rod and drag link holes are tapered for FJ80 tie rod ends (TRE) but can be reamed to accept GM 1 Ton TRE's or Heim Steering. Each arm comes double tapered for left-hand and right-hand drive applications. Another great feature he added was eliminating the use of shims and going to a set screw adjustment to set preload.

These only come with 25mm Trunnion Pins and bearings. Doing this vastly increases strength and load carrying capability. This is standard and not something we charge extra to upgrade. A new lower Trunnion cap is included and the bolt holes are counterbored to protect the bolt heads against any damage. We took a great product and made it even better.

NOTE: Relocation of the track bar is necessary if this kit is used on the stock vehicle (FJ80) suspension as it causes interference with the tie rod and incorrect angle with drag link being relocated to a high steer position.

I've been eyeballing hellfire knuckles for a while since they popped up on pirate and ih8mud. Back then it seemed they were tough to get. A couple weeks ago I looked at buying some and was surprised that ruffstuff had them in stock! Well it appears ruffstuff step up to the plate and acquired the hellfire knuckles from Billy and started producing them. I had my knuckles in hand within a week, along with everything else needed to complete my steering. Install was a breeze, hardest part was dealing with the old nasty grease/gear oil. The set screw for setting trunion bearing preload is genius and makes setup a snap. People familiar with the older hellfire knuckles should know that the ruffstuff ones come with bottom caps instead of cutting your old steering arm and using it as a cap. So you get the massive trunion bearing pins top and bottom! That's a huge upgrade. If you're set on running a 80 series axle, this IS the only steering solution in my mind. I previously had Slee, and albeit it worked, it just wasn't the end all be all.... Hellfires are! If you've never dealt with ruffstuff (I hadn't previously), what a great group of guys and great company, with some really great products at awesome prices. The ONLY issue I had was one of the studs for the high steer arms was messed up (nothing to do with ruffstuff) a simple call and they had a new stud sent out that day. I will be using this company for many more future projects. One last thing, the pics and videos don't do these knuckles any justice. Once you've got them and see how stout they are you'll be happy you went this route. The best, only, and last knuckle you'll ever buy for this axle. Thank you ruffstuff, keep up the good work.

Ask a Question

Jonathan on -- Asked: Can this be installed on my 1997 fj80 pr is this kit for a truck that was fitted with fj80 axles ?

Answered: This is just the knuckle kit so it will fit on the FJ80 front axle. Either way you will have to make new steering linkage and if you are staying with links you will need a panhard bar to match
Taylor on -- Asked: Do you have any instock?

Answered: The listing will have an "Out of Stock" stamp on the page when inventory is depleted. Currently we have plenty ready to go.
Trey on -- Asked: Can these be run on an 80 series with factory style 3" lift (i.e. Radius arms, coils in stock location & shocks in stock location)? Do you sell a panhard relocation bracket that will work with this setup? Thanks, Trey

Answered: Should be able to, you do need to redo your panhard so it matches the length and angle of your drag link since it is relocating it much higher
