Jeep XJ, TJ, LJ, ZJ & MJ Y Link 1 Ton Steering Kit

Jeep XJ, TJ, LJ, ZJ & MJ Y Link 1 Ton Steering Kit

Due to high demand please allow a 3-5 business day turnaround on Steering Kits

We have been manufacturing steering kits and components for many many years. Throughout that time we have been repeatedly asked to build a welded kit. After reaming your knuckles and pitman arm to the GM one ton taper this kit will bolt into XJ, MJ, TJ, LJ and ZJ axles.

The Ruffstuff Jeep heavy duty steering kit is the result and here are the features that make it stand out as the strongest and most durable while keeping the price fair. One of the biggest problems people have faced over the years when moving to larger tires and lifts are dramatically increased instances of bump steer/roll steer and potentially death wobble. When using the factory T link steering a compression will cause a toe out situation immediately followed as the vehicle unweights by an extreme toe in situation. Using a complete tie rod as you do with a Y Link you eliminate the constant toe in/toe out motion caused by the Inverted T design itself. That motion itself essentially is what death wobble is (constant toe in/toe out movement).

This is a bolt in replacement for factory steering on vehicles with up to a 4” lift. You will need to increase the knuckle taper to account for the much stronger ” taper vs the stock ⅝” taper on the pitman arm and knuckles.

All tubing included for both the tie rod and draglink are 1020 1.5” x .250 wall DOM. The large diameter and thickness of the forged 1 ton tie rods make these the strongest steering kits available.

The tubing is cut bent and welded here in our shop by professional American welders. Our fabricators constantly challenge themselves to be the best and are known for extreme quality work.

5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5 Amazing 1-ton Steering for my XJ
By Erik Osgood in CA on 5.26.2020
I have this steering kit on my 99 XJ. This kit is extremely beefy, and is by far the strongest component in my front end. After various hard trails, the only thing I have managed to damage on this kit was a poly bushing at the tie rod. RuffStuff sent me a replacement for this bushing for $15 and I got it the next business day. Definitely would recommend this kit to anyone who plans to wheel their XJ.

Shipping was fast to Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Ordering was a breeze. This is one heavy duty unit. Physically at least twice the size of stock pieces. Clears no problem with my 4" lift. A little pricey in Canadian dollars with exchange and shipping, but I still wholeheartedly recommend this unit as it is a permanent solution for problems I was experiencing! THANKS!!

Ask a Question

Darren on -- Asked: What is the recommended torque on the 1 ton tie rod nuts.

Answered: Castle nuts are 45 lbft
Clive B. on -- Asked: Can Prt# r2237 y lINK 1 ton Steering Kit be used on a RHD Jeep TJ?

Answered: Yes it can, we just need to swap the y-link tie rod end for the opposite ream to use it in a mirrored fashion. You can place the order over the phone with us so we can notate it, or shoot us an email to swap the end out if you purchase over the website. The RHD Jeep still must fall under the 4" lift limit, or 6" lift with aftermarket drop pitman arm for it to be long enough.
Daniel on -- Asked: Hey i have a 91 jeep wrangler YJ with a 4 inch lift running 32's. You know if this'll fit? Thx!

Answered: Once the knuckles and pitman arm are reamed to the 1 ton taper should fit without issue
Nathan S. on -- Asked: How do you adjust toe with this kit? Do we need to drop one of the ends?

Answered: Correct, with the bend in the linkage the ends must be removed from the knuckle to adjust toe
Vince L. on -- Asked: Is there any clearance issues with use this kit and my Currie antirock? Also I have a 5.5 inch lift and I really dont want a drop pitman arm Will this kit work? 99 Tj

Answered: No problem clearing swaybar linkage. The more horizontal you can get the drag link on your steering the better it will drive on the road, however if you do a drop pitman arm you will need to drop your panhard to match the angle to avoid bumpsteer. You can try it with out the drop pitman arm but it will likely bind during axle articulation which could damage the TRE or other components and the steering will have more play at that angle.
Robert on -- Asked: Does the 1 ton steering for the XJ come with the "cure"?

Answered: Yes, this pre-fabricated kit does include our original GM 1 ton Cure which would install where the drag link and tie rod intersect each other. We also include 2 of our new polyurethane Cures that would install at the knuckles(both versions of the Cure replace the existing dust/grease boot, so remove these before installing the Cure's. Some shaving of the white delrin Cure may be required for the tie rod end to fully seat).
Billy on -- Asked: I have tj with 35s with metal cloak fenders and no lift, will this steering work for this setup or is there a minimum lift required

Answered: No minimum lift is required. This will fit 0"-4" of lift with factory pitman arm, and can work up to 6" of lift with an aftermarket drop pitman arm.
Kenny on -- Asked: Are these kits fully welded and ready to bolt on and will it fit my 99 jeep cherokee with 6" lift?

Answered: Yes these are fully welded. You just need to ream your knuckles and pitman arm for the larger GM 1 ton taper and are ready to bolt in. You do need an extended drop pitman arm to use with a 6" lift.
Ole P. on -- Asked: Will this set up work on my stock non lifted 06 TJUR with 15inch rims ??

Answered: It clears 15" steel wheels on our TJ. Aluminum wheels may be too thick.
Brandan on -- Asked: Will this fit on a 6" lift for a 04 jeep TJ? If so do I need any additional parts? Also, do you have the tapered bit to do the conversion?

Answered: This will fit up to a 6" lift with a drop pitman arm(2" further drop over factory). You do need to either use our tapered knuckle inserts or a GM 7 degree reamer(part #: REAM) to allow everything to bolt up. Then get it aligned and your ready to go.
David on -- Asked: Where exactly do the poly grease boots go? Do u remove the standard boots from the TREs ??

Answered: Correct, you remove and replace the standard boots with the heavy duty poly boots
Anthony on -- Asked: Can this be used otk and is there an upgrade option for 7/8 ends in the future..

Answered: This kit is strictly under the knuckle as the over knuckle requires larger bends, an over the knuckle option will be available in the future. 7/8 heims have a different thread pitch (14TPI) so they cannot be used in a kit that originally had tie rod ends (18TPI)
Shawn M. on -- Asked: I currently run your 7/8th heim steering, OTK. I get some bump steer since my drag link is longer then my track bar. Going back to a Y set up might be just enough. Will this kit accept your heim joints?

Answered: You would have to swap the weld in bungs out. The heim joints are the same 7/8" diameter thread, but are a different thread pitch. Also the heim joints tend to be a bit shorter than the GM 1 ton tie rod ends so you may have to add length there.
Gavin L. on -- Asked: will this bee a direct fit for a stock jeep cherokee 2001

Answered: After reaming your knuckles and pitman arm for the GM 1 ton tapered ends it will bolt in.
Nick on -- Asked: What's to stop this from working OTK other than the passenger tie rod having the taper on the inside if you were to flip it? And to remedy that couldn't you just ream it the other way? As far as steering angles go, what issues would you have if you were to drop your track bar down, depending on lift height of course.

Answered: Basically we do not have it set up for over the knuckle yet because we are designing another bracket for the panhard bar so you can keep the drag link at the same angle as the panhard when switching to over the knuckle. If they are not parallel with each other and about the same length, the will fight each other during suspension travel.
Matt on -- Asked: Why not for the YJ? Thanks

Answered: This steering kit will hit the leaf spring on the YJ's.
Maxwell J. on -- Asked: So I'm looking at your kit, R2237, Is it a DYI Kit that requires welding? Or is it a direct replacement for the stock drag link and components for my '06 wrangler? Will it fit factory height jeep or is a lift required to clear the TREs to the track bars and sway bars. Does it fit within the factory 15" alum wheels? Lots of questions, sorry. Only want to purchase it once... max

Answered: This kit comes pre-welded and pre-bent. You do need to ream your knuckles and pitman arm for the larger GM 1 ton taper and then this would bolt right in and clear your sway bar, panhard and 15" wheels. This kit will work for stock height wranglers and fit up to 6" of lift with a drop pitman arm.
John on -- Asked: Is this kit for just utk or can it be used as otk?

Answered: Currently this kit is only for under the knuckle to work with the stock panhard bar. We are working on an over the knuckle version that will have a replacement track bar/panhard option to keep the drag link and panhard parallel with each other to reduce the chance of bump steer.
