XJ Chassis Channel Reinforcement

XJ Chassis Channel Reinforcement

We have now made these for more than 8 years and there are over 1,000 pairs in use! Perfect for a Crawler or Jeepspeed! This is our version of the Cherokee Unirail Reinforcement plates.

They are certainly as well made as any of the rest but have some very definite improvements to boot! Where the others stop the Cap at the floor creating a very long stress riser on the very weak floorboards, ours continue 1" onto the floor itself. Spreading out the load further and increasing the lifespan of the body.

Another of the unique way these are made is the front and rear risers follow the Unirail into the wheelwells. The rear doesn't need too much but the front goes up 9" into the front fender at the angle of the rail after it turns into the well.

When you install these it is the perfect time to create your own longarm kit and we have the brackets for it! If you are sticking with stock, either cutoff the leading 9" or remove and replace your link bracket after you install the rails. The last thing these do that others have chosen to ignore is make adding a skidplate easy. Weld the flat area around the crossmember and then use a jack to custom fit the bends. They are 3/16" thick and come as a pair.

I did light trails with my '01 XJ with 3" lift on 31"s and would hear the unibody creak and moan whenever it would flex. I put these on as well as the front stiffeners and you can't even tell it's a unibody anymore. Definitely worth the buy and install time. It should be the very first thing you do to your XJ.

These are the best frame stiffeners ever they went on really easy and fit tight to the factory unibody.

The fit is perfect. The function is stellar. I wouldn't build another xj without doing this first. Strong foundation with minimal added weight. And they look Sah-wee-tah!

By Andrew Maust in NM on 2.20.2012
The XJ has proven to be a good daily driver over the past 12 years. Never really went off road as I was unsure how a stock XJ would hold up. Put a small lift on and swear I could feel the frame flex. Called ruffstuff who really helped me out identifying the right parts for my Jeep. With the frame stiffeners they installed easy enough for a first time weld project. After words we took the jeep out for a test drive. On the road the jeep felt more solid almost like a new car. Since we were close to the mesa we decided to take a detour taking the jeep off road. Never really been that far off road but it worked without any complaints. Had the XJ fully flexed out and still able to open the doors as easy as if we were on flat ground. Only wish I had the time and funds for a long arm conversion at the same time. Regardless this is still a worth wile upgrade for any Jeep.

Questions and Answers

Ask a Question

Stalyn on 6-7-2018 Asked: When I do rocker guards witch ones are conpatable with these chassis channel reinforcement?

Answered: Since there are no preexisting holes on the XJ Sub Frame you typically have to weld or drill and bolt on the rocker guards so just about any should work. You may need to shorten the guard to compensate for the 3/16th thickness of the reinforcement to get the guard exactly where you want it
Jay on 4-4-2018 Asked: Adding these leaves less threads for the stock crossmember, what are you suppose to do with the studs? Adding the plate then the crossmember back on you can't thread the nut or bolt because they are now too short.

Answered: You'll want to install longer studs/bolts. If you jump to the 1:40 mark of this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pMX2UB_mHhc It will show you how to remove the stock XJ studs and then you can match them to a longer bolt at the hardware store.
Dustin on 2-15-2018 Asked: I have a 99 2door xj with rustys 8in long arm kit. Just wondering how much if any modification will be necessary to install?

Answered: You would need to clear off any link mounts, tabs, brackets etc on the bottom or outsides of that sub frame to make room for the reinforcement. Then you would reweld them to the reinforcements
Jeremy on 1-15-2018 Asked: I am preparing to replace portions of the floor due to rust. How far rearward do these reach? I have some rust in the “frame rail” almost dead center in the wheel well. I though cutting out the rust, welding in good metal and plating it like this maybe a good idea.

Answered: These go all the way to the factory rear spring hangers. You can see an install video made for us by "Bleepin Jeep" on their youtube channel.
Jeff S. on 11-24-2017 Asked: I have a 1996 XJ with a rubicon express lift. Will your frame stiffeners work with my lift? How if any modification will I need to do to your frame stiffener?

Answered: With our frame stiffeners they do wrap up the front of the frame where the stock lower control arm mounts are located. Ideally you would cut the mounts off, weld the stiffeners on and weld mounts to the stiffeners. Some people will chop this piece off the stiffener to avoid removing the stock bracket, but gives you that weak point. Check out Bleepin Jeep's youtube channel of their installation of our stiffeners here: https://youtu.be/ibw0Mtc9ylM
